What is the NDIS?
The NDIS was introduced in 2013 as a new way of funding individualised support for people with disability, their families, and carers.
How NDIS Works
Under the NDIS, eligible participants receive funding on an individual basis to purchase the supports and services they need to live and participate in their community as fully as possible. This can include things like personal care, access to the community, therapy services, and essential equipment.
The NDIS is designed around the principles of choice and control, meaning participants have the ability to decide what supports they need and who provides them. It operates on an insurance model, which means it takes a long-term view, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.
The NDIS is implemented by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and currently supporting more than 500,000 Australians with disabilities.
